About Grossglockner High Alpine Road

Opened in 1935 and built as a showpiece, the Grossglockner road is wide, perfectly graded and relentlessly steep. After a gentle run up the Fusch valley the toll gate at Ferleiten marks the start of the real thing: a dozen kilometres that hardly ever drop below double figures.

The climbing tops out at the Fuscher Törl, where the road dips across a high basin before the final rise to the Hochtor, the highest point of the through road, on the border between Salzburg and Carinthia.

Why ride this route indoors?

  • The gradient above Ferleiten is unusually constant — an hour of climbing where the power target never has to change.
  • The dip after the Fuscher Törl and the second rise to the Hochtor is a ready-made lesson in restarting an effort.
  • Outdoors it is a toll road shared with coaches and motorbikes, and closed all winter.
