Elevation profile

There are steeper climbs and there are higher roads, but very few places on earth let you start with your wheels next to the ocean and ride uphill, without a single real descent, to three thousand metres. The road leaves the surf town of Pāʻia, passes through Makawao’s ranch country and then winds up the flank of the volcano in long, even switchbacks.
The gradient is never brutal. What wears you down is the length: hour after hour of the same demand, through cane fields, eucalyptus, cloud and finally the bare cinder of the summit, inside Haleakalā National Park.
Why ride this route indoors?
- It may be the longest continuous paved climb you can ride — an endurance effort with no freewheeling at all.
- The moderate gradient lets you hold an aerobic zone for hours, which almost no real road allows.
- Indoors you skip the altitude, the cold summit and the flight to Maui, and keep the climbing.
