This is the classic big day of the Swiss Alps. From Andermatt the road climbs the Furka, drops past the Rhône glacier to Gletsch, and goes straight back up the granite ramps of the Grimsel between its reservoirs. Then comes a very long descent to Innertkirchen, deep in the Bernese Oberland.
The third pass is the one that decides the day: the Susten climbs from the valley floor for well over an hour, a road built in the 1940s purely to be beautiful. A last drop to Wassen and the pull back up the Schöllenen gorge closes the circle.
Why ride this route indoors?
- It is a full gran fondo’s worth of climbing in three clean blocks — ideal for a long endurance day when the weather says no.
- All three passes are shut by snow from autumn to early summer. Here they are open all year.
- The Susten arrives with two passes already in your legs, which is precisely the fatigue you need to train for a mountain event.
