About Gran Fondo Strade Bianche
The youngest of the great one-day races became a classic almost overnight, and the reason is its roads: the strade bianche, unpaved white gravel lanes that run along the ridges of the Crete Senesi south of Siena. The gran fondo rides the same sectors the day after the professionals.
The profile never stops moving. There are no mountains, only an endless succession of short, steep hills — many of them on gravel — and a finish that climbs through the medieval streets of Siena at a gradient that hurts even when you know it is coming.
Held the day after the professional Strade Bianche, in early March.
Why ride this route indoors?
- The constant short climbs make it a superb, unpredictable interval session: you are never on the flat for long.
- It rewards riders who can repeat hard efforts for hours, which is a fitness you can build one ride at a time.
- The gradients are faithful; the gravel is not — indoors you train the legs and leave the bike handling for the day.
