About Cape Town Cycle Tour

One of the largest timed cycling events in the world is a single lap of the Cape Peninsula. It leaves the centre of Cape Town, runs south along the mountain and down the False Bay coast through Muizenberg, Fish Hoek and Simon’s Town, then crosses the wild southern end of the peninsula towards the Atlantic.

The return is the scenic half: Chapman’s Peak Drive, cut into the cliffs above the ocean, then Hout Bay and the climb the locals dread most, Suikerbossie — not long, but placed exactly where the legs run out — before the fast coast road home to Green Point.

Held in March. The event is known as a course of about 109 km.

Why ride this route indoors?

  • A rolling course with a handful of short climbs is a very good stand-in for a fast group ride.
  • Suikerbossie comes late, so it rewards riders who have practised holding back — which is a plan you can test.
  • The Cape’s famous south-easter decides the day outdoors. Indoors the course is the same every time you ride it.

Good to know

+Is this the official course of Cape Town Cycle Tour?

No. It was recreated by Cycloscape from open map data (OpenStreetMap) following public descriptions of the course, for indoor training. It may differ from the official course or from current road conditions.

+What do I need to ride Cape Town Cycle Tour indoors?

A smart trainer or a power meter, and a browser. Cycloscape connects over Bluetooth or ANT+ from the browser, sets the resistance of a smart trainer to the real gradient, and turns the route’s GPX into a 3D world. There is nothing to install.

+Is it free?

Yes. You can start riding this route without an account. A free account saves your result and puts you on the route’s leaderboard.
