About Desafio da Serra do Rio do Rastro

The Serra do Rio do Rastro is where the high plateau of southern Brazil ends in a wall. The SC-390 leaves the old coal-mining town of Lauro Müller along the valley floor, then, under the cliffs of the Serra Geral, folds itself into a stack of hairpins so tight that from the top the road looks like a ribbon dropped down the mountain.

The Desafio rides it the way a climb should be ridden: from the centre of Lauro Müller to the viewpoint at the top, with the road closed. The valley rises gently; the real climb starts where the forest closes in and the bends begin, and it does not let up until the Mirante — where, on a clear day, you can see every bend you have just ridden, and on many others you finish above a sea of cloud.

Recent editions have been held twice a year, in the southern autumn and spring, with the road closed to traffic. The event lists its course at 24.6 km, finishing at 1,419 m.

Why ride this route indoors?

  • One long climb with an easy first half and a hard second is exactly the shape that punishes a fast start — and exactly the one you can learn to pace on a trainer.
  • Every hairpin gives a few metres of relief before the next ramp: the rhythm of a switchback climb, rehearsed until it is second nature.
  • Outdoors the Serra is often lost in fog and open to traffic. Indoors the road is always clear and the gradient always the same, so one attempt can be compared with the next.

Good to know

+Where does the Desafio da Serra do Rio do Rastro start and finish?

It starts in the centre of Lauro Müller, on Rua Henrique Lage, and climbs the SC-390 (Rodovia Governador Irineu Bornhausen) all the way to the Mirante at the top of the Serra, beside the Polícia Militar Rodoviária post in Bom Jardim da Serra. The track on this page follows that course, recreated from OpenStreetMap.

+Where is the hard part of the Serra do Rio do Rastro?

In the second half. From Lauro Müller the road climbs gently along the valley; the steep part is the stack of hairpins up the escarpment, and it runs right to the top. The profile on this page shows the gradient of every kilometre, so you can see where to save your legs.

+Is this the official course of Desafio da Serra do Rio do Rastro?

No. It was recreated by Cycloscape from open map data (OpenStreetMap) following public descriptions of the course, for indoor training. It may differ from the official course or from current road conditions.

+What do I need to ride Desafio da Serra do Rio do Rastro indoors?

A smart trainer or a power meter, and a browser. Cycloscape connects over Bluetooth or ANT+ from the browser, sets the resistance of a smart trainer to the real gradient, and turns the route’s GPX into a 3D world. There is nothing to install.
