About Amstel Gold Race Toerversie

The only hilly corner of the Netherlands is a maze of narrow lanes, and the Amstel Gold Race uses all of it. The sportive, ridden the day before the professionals, winds through the same countryside around Valkenburg: dozens of short climbs, constant corners, and hardly a straight kilometre.

No single hill is long. The Keutenberg has the steepest ramp in the country, the Eyserbosweg arrives just when the route has worn you down, and the Cauberg — the climb that made the race famous — rises out of the middle of Valkenburg at the end.

Held on the Saturday before the Amstel Gold Race, in April, over six distances from 65 to 240 km. The organiser lists its 150 km course at 1,920 m of climbing.

Why ride this route indoors?

  • Thirty short climbs is thirty intervals, with whatever recovery the road allows — a session nobody would dare to write.
  • The rhythm of these hills, on and off the power all day, is its own kind of fitness, and it transfers to any hilly race.
  • Outdoors the hard part is the corners and the crowds; here it is only the climbing.
