Elevation profile
12–678 m · 1 categorised climb · Hard · RoadAbout Sa Calobra
Sa Calobra is a dead end: the road was built in the 1930s to reach a cove, and the only way out is back up. It climbs from the water through a narrow cleft in the rock, then uncoils across the mountainside in more than twenty hairpins, with the sea behind you almost the whole way.
Near the top is the bend everybody knows — the ‘tie knot’, where the road loops a full circle and passes under itself. It is a steady, honest gradient from bottom to top, which is why it has become the benchmark climb of every spring training camp on the island.
Why ride this route indoors?
- On the island you have to descend it before you can climb it. Indoors you start at the sea.
- A steady gradient for well under an hour makes it an ideal repeatable test: the same effort, the same road, a number you can beat.
- It is the climb half the professional peloton uses to check its form in winter — a fair yardstick for yours.
Good to know
+Is this the official route of Sa Calobra?
No. It was recreated by Cycloscape from open map data (OpenStreetMap) following public descriptions of the route, for indoor training. It may differ from the official route or from current road conditions.
+What do I need to ride Sa Calobra indoors?
A smart trainer or a power meter, and a browser. Cycloscape connects over Bluetooth or ANT+ from the browser, sets the resistance of a smart trainer to the real gradient, and turns the route’s GPX into a 3D world. There is nothing to install.
+Is it free?
Yes. You can start riding this route without an account. A free account saves your result and puts you on the route’s leaderboard.
