About Passo dello Stelvio — Prato

The climb from Prato is the side in the photographs. It starts quietly along the Solda river through Gomagoi and Trafoi, and then the valley ends and the road has no choice but to go up the headwall: hairpin after hairpin, each with its number on a stone, counting down from forty-eight.

The road was engineered in the 1820s and has barely changed since. The last third is above the treeline, with the whole ladder of bends visible below you and the pass — and the thin air — above. When the Giro d’Italia comes here it is usually the highest point of the race.

Why ride this route indoors?

  • The pass is closed by snow for most of the year; indoors it is open in January.
  • Two hours of near-constant gradient is a rare training stimulus, and the numbered bends make the effort easy to break into pieces.
  • The altitude that makes the real summit so hard is the one thing you can leave out while you build the legs for it.
