About Quebrantahuesos

Named after the bearded vulture of the Pyrenees, the Quebrantahuesos leaves Sabiñánigo, climbs through Jaca and Canfranc to the Somport pass and drops into France down the long Aspe valley. There the character of the day changes: the Col de Marie-Blanque is short, and its last kilometres are the steepest of the route.

From Laruns the course turns for home up the Col du Pourtalet, a climb so long that it is measured in hours rather than kilometres, before a fast run down the Tena valley and one last sting at Hoz de Jaca.

Held in June; places are drawn by lottery. The event is known as a course of about 200 km with some 3,500 m of climbing.

Why ride this route indoors?

  • The Portalet is the kind of climb — gentle, endless, late in the day — that is only trained by spending the time on it.
  • Marie-Blanque’s final ramps are a useful shock: a real low-cadence strength effort in the middle of an endurance ride.
  • The Somport comes first, long and steady: even the opening fifty kilometres make a worthwhile tempo ride.

Good to know

+Is this the official course of Quebrantahuesos?

No. It was recreated by Cycloscape from open map data (OpenStreetMap) following public descriptions of the course, for indoor training. It may differ from the official course or from current road conditions.

+What do I need to ride Quebrantahuesos indoors?

A smart trainer or a power meter, and a browser. Cycloscape connects over Bluetooth or ANT+ from the browser, sets the resistance of a smart trainer to the real gradient, and turns the route’s GPX into a 3D world. There is nothing to install.

+Is it free?

Yes. You can start riding this route without an account. A free account saves your result and puts you on the route’s leaderboard.
