About Maratona dles Dolomites

The long course opens with the Sellaronda — Campolongo, Pordoi, Sella and Gardena in quick succession — and for many riders that alone would be a day out. Then it climbs the Campolongo a second time and heads south, away from the comfort of the loop.

The Passo Giau is what the Maratona is known for: close to ten kilometres at an average near ten per cent, arriving after a hundred kilometres of racing. The Falzarego and the short kick to the Valparola follow, and a wall in the village of La Villa is thrown in a few kilometres from the line.

Held on the first Sunday of July on closed roads; places are drawn by lottery. The organiser lists the long course at 138 km with 4,230 m of climbing.

Why ride this route indoors?

  • The Giau on fresh legs and the Giau at kilometre one hundred are different climbs. You can only practise the second one by riding what comes before it.
  • The course opens with the four passes of the Sellaronda — a natural place to stop on the days that are not for all seven.
  • Entry is by lottery and the passes are under snow half the year; the course here is always available.
